Sunday Recap for 102719 from Romans 8.12-17 The Spirit of Adoption

Sunday, October 27th 2019, Evident Grace looked at Romans 8.12-17:

Romans 8.12 So then, brothers, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. 13 For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. 14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. 15 For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” 16 The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.

From those verses, we looked at this theme, Big Idea, and three points:

“Adoption is the highest privilege of the gospel. The traitor is forgiven, brought in for supper, and given the family name.” J.I. Packer

A New Way to Live

Romans 8.12 So then, brothers, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. 13 For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.

When you are a debtor, you owe something. Before you had faith in Jesus, you owed a debt to sin. When you were tempted, you had no choice but to obey sin. But now, through the work of the Spirit, you not only can obey, you can kill sin in your life. The same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead, now gives life to your mortal bodies.

A New Family

14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. 15 For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!”

God adopts His new children, and He replaces their spirit of slavery and fear with a spirit of adoption that causes them to cry out in intimacy. Abba is the most intimate name of God. Those adopted by God cry out, “Daddy, God!” Slaves know their position is conditional. Children know their position is secure. Slaves are present to serve a task. Children are present because they are family.

A New Perspective

16 The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.

And the beautiful thing about this adoption is that God sends His Spirit to remind our spirit that we are children of God. As children, we are then heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ. But as co-heirs with Christ, we will suffer with Him as well. This suffering is not for no purpose. This suffering is to honor God and to lead others to God as well.

A New Perspective

Truth: God adopted you and equipped you with His Spirit so that you might live a life of security, intimacy, and obedience.

Application: Live knowing that you are securely loved and transformed through the adoptive work of God. He chose you. Jesus secured you. The Holy Spirit sustains you.

Action: Pray that God would enable you to live as a child of God.
