Sunday Recap for 042119 – Forgetting to Fear from Luke 24

Sunday, April 21, 2019, Evident Grace Fellowship looked at Luke 24:

Luke 24:1 But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they went to the tomb, taking the spices they had prepared. 2 And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb, 3 but when they went in they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. 4 While they were perplexed about this, behold, two men stood by them in dazzling apparel. 5 And as they were frightened and bowed their faces to the ground, the men said to them, “Why do you seek the living among the dead? 6 He is not here, but has risen. Remember how he told you, while he was still in Galilee, 7 that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men and be crucified and on the third day rise.”

From those verses, we pursued this Big Idea and these three points:

Big Idea:  No Fear

Approaching God

Facing Your Fear

Remembering Jesus’ Words

Approaching God

Luke 24:1 But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they went to the tomb, taking the spices they had prepared. 2 And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb, 3 but when they went in they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.

Can you imagine the feelings of the disciples?  They wanted to believe Jesus, but they were scared.  They wanted to believe He had risen from the dead, but they also carried spices in case He hadn’t.  Many of us approach Jesus in the same way.  We hope He is true and will work in our lives, but we are afraid He won’t.  We hedge our bets.  Yes, our hope is that Jesus has risen from the dead.  He did keep His promises.  He is faithful.

Facing Your Fear

4 While they were perplexed about this, behold, two men stood by them in dazzling apparel. 5 And as they were frightened and bowed their faces to the ground, the men said to them, “Why do you seek the living among the dead? 6 He is not here, but has risen.

The disciples were scared. Can you imagine?  They go looking for Jesus, but what they find is angels.  They were scared to do death and faced the ground fearful of death.  But their fear was alleviated by the one thing that would truly alleviate them:  Jesus has risen again.  As we approach Jesus with our fears, our hope can only be alleviated as we trust that Jesus has risen again as this gives us hope.

Remembering Jesus’ Words

Remember how he told you, while he was still in Galilee, 7 that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men and be crucified and on the third day rise.”

We are weak and fearful and forgetful just like the disciples.  But remembering that Jesus is faithful to His promises, and that He always has been, gives us hope that He will always be faithful to us as well.

Big Idea:  No Fear

Approaching God

Facing Your Fear

Remembering Jesus’ Words

Truth:  Our fears lessen when we approach God about our fears and apply the words of Jesus.

Application:  Live knowing that God desires to continually allay your fears through the words of Jesus.

Action:  Articulate your fears.  Name them.  Memorize a promise of Jesus for each one.
